Do What's Obvious

You are in the middle of a scene. There are so many options. What should you do next? How do you decide? Every second of indecision feels like an eternity. Somehow nothing comes to mind even though you could do literally ANYTHING. AAAAaaaaaaa!!!!!

Make your life easier and do what's obvious. Take the story one step at a time and just do the next small thing that needs to be done. The next thing doesn't have to be hilarious or groundbreaking. Its just the next thing. Keep the story moving and trust that your fellow improvisors will take whatever you do with excitement and joy.

When I'm working on a project this advice is particularly relevant when faced with ambiguity and uncertainty. In the beginning stages when the horizon is not in sight and your surroundings are barren. What do you do? When faced with situations like this I don't panic. I embrace the ambiguity – dance with it. I have a bias toward action and doing something. What's the next small thing we can do to shed more light? What needs do be done? Maybe we're pushing something off because we know it'll be hard – do it. Do something. What could be the easiest fix? Try that first. Develop a quick prototype, test it out, learn something.

Do what's obvious. Do the dance.
